BOSTON — While many runners will spend the entirety of the 2024 Boston Marathon traversing the course, the race’s champions have already crossed the finish line on Boylston Street. Monday witnessed both familiar faces securing victories and newcomers making their mark in the prestigious event.
Hellen Obiri Secures Victory in Boston Marathon 2024 Women’s Race
Hellen Obiri of Kenya surged ahead in the latter stages to clinch her second consecutive win in the Boston Marathon women’s category, completing the course with a time of 2:22:37. She becomes the first back-to-back winner since Catherine Ndereba of Kenya achieved the feat in 2004 and 2005. Initially part of a pack of 20 runners, Obiri and Sharon Lokedi emerged as the leading duo in the final miles, drawing enthusiastic cheers from the spectators. However, it was Obiri who ultimately surged ahead in the final stretch, adding another Boston triumph to her resume. Obiri had also claimed victory in the 2023 New York City Marathon. Lokedi finished second with a time of 2:22:45, followed by Edna Kiplagat in third place at 2:23:21, securing a clean sweep for Kenya in the top three positions. The 33-year-old maintained a commanding lead throughout the race, ultimately crossing the finish line with a time of 2:06:17, the 10th fastest in Boston Marathon history. Despite facing a slight challenge in the final miles, Lemma’s lead remained unassailable, securing his first-place position.
